Murungakka Manga Sambar

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Toor Dal
  • 12 Shallots
  • 1 Tomato
  • 2 tsp Sambar powder
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • Salt as required
  • Tamarind – size of a small lemon
  • 1 Murungakka/ drumstick – 1 cut into 2”piece
  • 1/2 Raw Mango / Manga cut into small chunks
  • 3 Brinjal / Kathirikai cut into small piecse

To temper

  • 2 tsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Split urad dal
  • Curry leaves – few

Instructions

Preparation:

  • Soak tamarind in ½ cup of water for at least 20 mins.
  • Squeeze the juice and discard the remains.

Method:

  • In a pressure add Toor dal, turmeric powder, 1 tsp of oil and 2 cups of water.
  • Pressure cook for 4 whistles
  • Let the pressure release naturally.
  • Then Mash the dal.
  • Add vegetables, sambar powder, shallots, tomato, salt and cook for 1 more whistle.
  • Now add tamarind juice and let it boil for a min or 2 .
  • Transfer to a serving bowl.
  • Temper with items under “to temper”.
  • Serve with steamed rice.
