Everyone will have their own version of making Nattu Kozhi Kulambu / country chicken Gravy. The Recipe here is adapted from a cookbook. I toned down the recipe to my family’s liking. This Gravy is prepared with masala which is roasted and ground. The Ground masala gives the gravy a nice flavor and aroma. Nattu Kozhi Kulambu with Hot Idlies is a great combination. How to make Nattu Kozhi Kulambu

1. Keep your Ingredients ready.

2. In a pressure cooker, add chicken, add 1 tsp ginger garlic paste, ½ tsp red chili powder and ¼ tsp turmeric powder. Add 1 ½ cups of water and pressure cook for 6-8 whistles.

3. Add 1 tsp oil in pan for preparing masala.

3. Roast all the items under “to grind” except coconut.

4. Add coconut before switching off the flame. Cool and grind to a fine paste.

5. In a pan add oil. Once hot, add mustard seeds, split urad dal and fennel seeds. Add shallots and curry leaves. Let onion turn golden.

6. Now add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder and salt.

7. Add ginger-garlic paste.

8. Add tomatoes and cook till mushy.

9. Add cooked chicken pieces along with stock.

10. Add the masala paste and 1 cup of water. Let it simmer for 20 mins.

11. Delicious Nattu Kozhi Kulambu is ready.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams NattuKozhi
  • 15 Shallots
  • 1 Tomato
  • 1 tbsp Ginger garlic paste
  • 2 tsp Red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp Coriander Powder
  • few Curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Split urad dal
  • 1/4 cup Sesame oil

To Grind:

  • 2 tbsp Grated coconut
  • 2 tsp Coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp Fennel
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper corns
  • 6 Shallots
  • 3 Red chillies

Instructions

Preparation:

  • In a pressure cooker, add chicken, add 1 tsp ginger garlic paste, ½ tsp red chili powder and ¼ tsp turmeric powder. Add 1 ½ cups of water and pressure cook for 6-8 whistles. Let the pressure release naturally.
  • Add 1 tsp oil in pan and roast all the items under “to grind”. Add coconut before switching off the flame.
  • Cool and grind to a fine paste.

  • Add tomatoes and cook till mushy.
  • Now add cooked chicken pieces along with stock.
  • Add the masala paste and 1 cup of water.
  • Let it simmer for 20 mins.
  • Serve hot with rice/idly/dosa
