Poori Masala | A Potato curry for Poori

Poori Masala, also known as Potato Masala for Poori, is a classic South Indian side dish that perfectly complements the fluffy and golden pooris. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely weekend breakfast or celebrating a festive occasion, this flavourful masala is a must-have on your plate.

Potato Masala usually called Poori Masala(as it goes great with Poori) is a popular dish across India. You will be pleasantly surprised to see how simple the recipe is. The recipe calls for minimal ingredients but has great taste. I usually make this for a weekend Breakfast and enjoy our weekend. You can serve this along with chapathi or Roti too. Poori Masala | Side dish for Poori

Poori and potato Masala is a great combination which is liked by many in south india. The recipe I share here is Tamilnadu version, tastes similar to resataurant Poori Masala.

Ingredients

  • 3 Potatoes
  • 1 Onion
  • 2 Green Chillies
  • 1 tsp Ginger Garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp Garam Masala
  • 1 tbsp Powdered Roasted Gram Dal(pottukadai)
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • salt as required

Instructions

  • Wash and cut the potatoes into half pressure cook for 2 whistles. Let the pressure release naturally.
  • Once cooled, peel the skin and mash the potatoes.
  • In a pan add oil. Once hot add jeera and then add onions and green chillies. Cook till translucent. Add ginger garlic paste and cooked till Raw smell leaves.
  • Next add Garam Masala and turmeric powder mix well.
  • Add mashed potatoes and salt.
  • Now in a cup add one tablespoon of Powdered roasted gram dal and mix it with the water. Make it to a thin paste.
  • Add this to the masala and let it cook for 3-4 minutes in medium flame.
  • Switch off the flame at the right consistency.
  • Poori Masala is ready

Notes

  • Adding Powdered Roasted Dal is the key for Restaurant style Poori Masala.

How to make Poori Masala / Potato Masala for Poori

  4. Next add Garam Masala and turmeric powder mix well.add spice powder
  5. Add mashed potatoes and salt.add cooked potatoes
  6. Now in a cup add one tablespoon of Powdered roasted gram dal and mix it with the water. Make it to a thin paste.
  7. Add this to the masala and let it cook for 3-4 minutes in medium flame.Poori Masala
  8. Switch off the flame at the right consistency.Poori Masala

Serving Ideas:

  • Serve Potato Masala with Poori or Chapathi.

Notes:

  • Adding Powdered roasted gram dal(pottukadalai) is the key for getting restaurant style Poori Masala.
